"Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

huh! another issue on racial discrimination
got this from Jojo La Maria's Note on facebook

Candy Pangilinan said, "TAO PO AKO, HINDI PO AKO IGOROT..."

I guessed it right! You would read my bulletin because you were affected by the subject...

I actually heard those words come out from Candy Pangilinan's mouth TWICE this afternoon (May 9, 2009) during her PRE-MOTHER’S DAY show in SM Baguio.

She was late for the show and a DJ from a radio station started the program for her by giving away prizes to the audience who were within the barricades. She suddenly appeared and greeted the crowd and also walked down the run-way. It was when she reached the end of the run-way when she blurted out those words.

I was affected the first time she blurted it out, but just thought that she might have said it wrongly… but when she did a replay of her entrance, she said the same phrase again. Since most of her audience were not Igorots and are not from the Cordilleras (we are not people who wouldn’t pass up the chance to see artistas), no one reacted to what she said. My mother-in-law who just arrived and didn’t get to hear the ignorant remarks was starting to enjoy Candy’s antics on stage until I told her what Candy has said earlier. As what I have expected, her blood pressure shoot up and was mad. She started telling to the other people what I have told her and some just disregarded it and said that it was just a joke (obviously, they were not from here). As I have observed, most of the individuals called on stage to claim their prizes were mostly from the different regions near the Cordillera.

What she has said is not something to be ignored, it is not a RACIAL DISCRIMINATION, but a RACIAL MURDER. We were not simply discriminated, but we were wiped out from humanity by her statement alone. We are now in the modern times where we are supposed to be more educated and more exposed. Would you believe if she would say in the future that she didn’t know that we, the Igorots are humans too? What would the children who have heard those statements think and say when they go back to school?

What would you suggest that we do about this?

Re: "Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

we should declare Candy Pangilinan persona non grata in Baguio and the Cordillera for making a racial slur that has again demeaned the honor of being an igorot!.....

if so, sm should apologize, the organizer should apologize, her talent manager should suspend Candy and she should attend a briefing at the office of culture and minority affairs at malacanang......

Re: "Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

Is the title of the article supposed to be the alleged statement? Am asking 'coz it's kinda vague. The article has 6 paragraphs and a lot of bla bla bla but I can't find the alleged discriminatory statement or even any story as to why or what made that Candy (I don't know her and I don't care who she is) make that alleged statement.

Will somebody please post what really happened and what statement or statements were said and how or why it was said? We need to know everything that happened before we start crucifying somebody. And if it's true then SM should also be liable.

Re: "Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

from the first post, i think this was just one of her oneliners. kasi inulit nya daw the statement on a separate set of ears (second entrance?) so anu yun? just for laugghs? i hope not. and one would think comedians are smart because they have to be witty. if she really did think this was funny, well.. this one's neanderthal.

Re: "Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

i think..that was just a joke (for being a comedienne)..but not a funny joke because she was in the place where most of the igorots are living...and she must thought of having offended some of the people in that place.

Siguro kelangan muna nating malaman kung ano talaga pinagmulan...unang una alam nyang nasa teritoryo sya ng mga igorot, bakit sya magsasalita ng ganun?

Re: "Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

You are all taking it too sensitively. It's only a joke, kunana garud! And everyone knows Candy is a comedianne. What gives?  We are proud of our race as Igorots but we should also stop being TOO SENSITIVE!

Hey. It's not a question of sensitivity. It's a matter of pride and honor. Even the great Romulo was censured because of a comment he made that was seen as derogatory to the Igorots. Whether that Candy is a comedian, a politician or just some mammal in the street does not give her the right to belittle us Igorots. What's the name of that COMEDIAN on the Seinfeld show again? His career took a nosedive after a blunder that was similar to Candy's. Now he's a comedian too but he found out the hard way that there are some "jokes" you just don't make in public. You still think that it's a sensitivity thing?

Re: "Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

Relax mga Kabayan, why don't we divert our mind on who that candy pangilinan is...She's in the showbiz industry for a long time i think but she never made it to stardome, could it be that it's her way to attract attention. Ganito yan, kung may magrereklamo na Igorot about her statement, e di syempre maraming TV shows and magiinvite sa kanya for interview tapos kunwari magpapublic apology sya so sisikat sya kahit for the meantime lang (that's how the industry works)
So the best thing to do is...I don't really know!nakakagigil yang candy na yan, she's a cunning woman, she's making statement just to get to the front page. But guys, are you going to allow that???

Re: "Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

If her jokes are totally based on race/culture (see: Russell Peters), then it might be more acceptable. But, that's not the meat of her material. It's a bad attempt at humor, and I agree with most of the posters here, she should be socially held culpable for her words. Protest her shows in the region, protest her shows in other regions. If you have the time.

First things first. Is this the Candy P_ta http://www.yehey.com/entertainment/uploads/candy_pangilinan.jpg we're talking about? If so, not worth it but you up in Baguio could start the course by sending SM a letter indicating displeasure on the slur with the note of boycotting SM and things will follow.

Butthead I don't give a sh_t about this biatch name Candy P.

Re: "Tao Po Ako, Hindi Po Ako Igorot"

reposting from FACEBOOK (a letter sent by Atty. Yangot to Candy Pangilinan)

Candy, I am a poet and human rights lawyer who happens to be indigenous. In particular, I am a member of the Kankanaey ethnolinguistic group. Kankanaeys are Igorots.

I am currently in Australia attending a training on indigenous peoples rights. Yesterday, I learned that when you had a concert in Baguio, you shouted twice: "Tao po ako, hindi po ako Igorot." This incident was discussed with the participants in the training because I brought it out. Australian aborigines recall the time they were not considered humans and were downgraded by the Australian government to the level of "part of the flora and fauna." How you treated us right in our territory smacks of shamelessness and outright ignorance of who Igorots are. You are as bad as the Australian government which, by the way, had the humility to apologize to the aborigines in 2009.

You can claim that you were joking. Twice, you were joking? Real artists use performance art to inspire noble emotions, not hatred for or discrimination against a particular ethnic group. Since you call yourself an artist, you should know that you have a social responsibility which demands that you should not promote ethnic bias.

It is a good thing that you are not so popular because your very prejudicial statement would have influenced the minds of millions of people. The fact of your stature in the entertainment industry does not however mitigate the vileness of your statement.

I hope that like the Australian government, you will have the humility to apologize on national television to the indigenous peoples whose collective identity you slurred with your careless statement.
